Car insurance in Mississauga

It’s illegal to drive in Mississauga, or anywhere else in Ontario, without car insurance. While paying for it may seem inconvenient, this ruling is here for a reason – to protect both you and those around you.

The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) is the regulatory agency that oversees the insurance industry, having replaced the Financial Service Commision of Ontario (FSCO). Its goal is to ensure fair and affordable auto insurance rates for all Canadians as well as protect consumer rights.

Unfortunately, like many cities in the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga has some of the highest insurance rates in the province. However, you can mitigate this issue by comparing quotes on websites like LowestRates.ca to find the cheapest auto insurance rate available.

You also don’t need every coverage in existence to legally drive in Mississauga, so you can save some money there, if you want. With that in mind, here’s what you need to know about both mandatory and optional coverages in Ontario:

Mandatory coverage for Mississauga drivers

‘Mandatory’ means that it’s enforced by law. So, if your insurance doesn’t cover some of the items listed below, expect to get fined between $5,000 and $50,000 (note that it’s extremely unlikely that your policy won’t cover the basics).

Here’s your basic auto insurance must include:

Optional coverage for Mississauga drivers

If you find that basic auto insurance is not enough for you, you can always purchase additional coverage. Here are some of your options:

Factors that determine your car insurance rates in Mississauga

No two auto insurance rates are the same. That’s why you can’t simply google ‘insurance premium in Mississauga’ and find the number. Insurers take several different factors into account when determining your premium – all of which are specific to you, and you alone. Here’s what they are:

Car insurance rates for Mississauga seniors

If you’re over 50 years old, you can start saving on your car insurance with senior car insurance. People between the ages of 50 and 70 are considered some of the safest drivers around. However, once you turn 70, you’ll start seeing your insurance rates go up, as insurers consider drivers between 70 and 80 to be less safe – due to the decline in their driving abilities.

If you find yourself struggling with paying your insurance rates for one reason or another, consider doing the following:

Car insurance rates for students in Mississauga

If you’re a student under 25, and you’re hoping to insure your car for a cheap rate, you may find yourself struggling. This is because insurers consider you to be a ‘young’ driver – someone who’s inexperienced or high-risk due to their age group. Basically, in their eyes, you’re more likely to get into an accident or receive a traffic ticket than someone above 25.

However, this doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with high insurance rates, especially if you’re a good driver. Here are some options to consider:

Car insurance for new immigrants in Mississauga

What happens to your driver’s license once you immigrate to Canada from another country? In most cases, you get to keep it for up to 60 days. After that, you have to get a Canadian driver’s license.

Do note that once you secure your G2 or G driver’s license in Ontario, you’ll be legally required to carry auto insurance whenever you drive. In addition, if you don’t have an insurance history from your previous country, most insurers in Ontario will see you as a novice driver – someone whose driving experience they’re yet to assess. This can lead to a high insurance premium.

If the latter is the case, your best bet is to try the following:

Car insurance for high-risk drivers in Mississauga

Incurring too many traffic tickets or suffering too many at-fault accidents can make you a high-risk driver in the eyes of insurers. They base this assessment on the likelihood of you filing a claim in the future. The more driving mistakes you make, the more likely you are to file one.

This can be a precarious situation, as many insurers may refuse to work with you in the first place, making it impossible for you to drive legally. If that’s the case, consult the Facility Association – an organization that includes all auto insurance providers and offers insurance to those who have trouble finding it by regular means.

If your situation isn’t quite so dire, here’s what you can do to lower your rates:

What can I do to get cheap car insurance in Mississauga?

It's easy — if you know how. Here are some of the best ways to lower your auto insurance premiums:

Shop around

We'll show you the most competitive rates from all the top insurers. Now you can compare quotes all in one place.

Buy the right coverage

Avoiding extra frills in your policy and paying for only the coverage you need will lower your premiums.

Drive responsibly

Your driving record impacts your rate. Fewer infractions and fines equals cheaper insurance.

Pay on time

Prompt payments can save you money on late fees and lower your premiums. Insurers love a good customer.

Bundle up

Adding a house, motorcycle, RV, or other type of insurance policy to your car insurance plan can lower your rates.

Be safe, not sorry

Safety features like winter tires and alarm systems can help reduce your insurance premium.

Stick with one insurer

Most auto insurance companies give special discounts to customers who stay with them for a number of years.

Take a course

A defensive driving course makes you a better driver and can significantly reduce your car insurance premiums.

Keep driving

The math is clear: more experience on the road equals lower car insurance premiums. Young drivers almost universally pay higher rates for car insurance. While it’s difficult for new drivers to secure cheap car insurance rates, you may be able to lower your rates by maintaining good grades and attending driving school.

Look at location

Where you drive affects your premiums. Some areas are associated with higher rates of car accidents and theft.

Choose the right car

Cars with high crash-test scores, low theft ratings, and less powerful engines tend to have cheaper insurance rates.

Track your driving

With a usage-based car insurance policy, you can turn your low-risk driving habits into lower premiums.

Frequently asked questions about car insurance in Mississauga.

How much is car insurance in Mississauga?

There is no set car insurance rate for Mississauga. Individual factors such as your driving record, age, car and so on will all play a role in determining your particular premium. Your neighbourhood in Mississauga will contribute to this number as well. To learn more, be sure to compare quotes on LowestRates.ca to see the range of available premiums in your area.

How do Mississauga car insurance rates compare to other cities in Ontario?

Mississauga, like many cities in the Greater Toronto Area, has some of the highest insurance rates in Ontario. According to our research, Mississauga's annual car insurance rate in 2021 was roughly 0.9% higher than the annual rate in Toronto, which has some of the highest rates in Ontario.

Which Mississauga postal code has the cheapest average auto insurance premiums?

Neighbourhoods with postal codes starting with L5H and L5J had the cheapest average auto insurance premium in 2021. Lower traffic density, which means fewer accidents and insurance claims, and less crime, which results in fewer car thefts and related acts of vandalism, are likely why the premiums are cheaper in those areas.

Which Mississauga postal code has the most expensive average auto insurance premiums?

Neighbourhoods with postal codes starting with L4T, L4V, L4X, L5P and L5T had the most expensive average auto insurance premium in 2021. Higher crime rates, which lead to increased car theft and vandalism, are likely the reason for the more expensive premiums. Denser traffic, which usually results in more accidents and insurance claims, may be the other reason.

Why is auto insurance so expensive in Mississauga?

While there is no exact reason for why insurance premiums are so expensive in Mississauga, there are several factors at play here. For one, it’s part of the Greater Toronto Area, which has some of the highest crime rates and busiest roads in Ontario. Both lead to higher insurance rates. Crime rates usually result in more cars being either stolen or vandalized, while busy roads lead to more accidents. In both cases, drivers are forced to file claims.

Speaking of traffic density, Highway 401, which runs through the GTA, is considered to be the busiest highway in North America, which likely is one of the biggest reasons the rates in Mississauga are so high.

Where do I get the cheapest car insurance quotes in Mississauga?

In 2021, neighbourhoods with postal codes starting with L5H and L5J had the cheapest average auto insurance premiums.

If moving to a different neighbourhood is out of the question for you, which is very likely, then your second-best bet is to shop around for the cheapest quotes in your area via comparison tools like LowestRates.ca. Conversely, you can contact local insurers one by one and ask them for their price yourself, if you’re willing to take the time.

Will average auto insurance rates in Mississauga increase or decrease in 2023?

There is a very high chance that auto insurance will go up in 2023 in Mississauga. The pandemic has caused insurance rates to plummet, as during the lockdown, fewer drivers were out on the roads. This meant fewer accidents and fewer claims filed, leading to lower insurance rates. However, now that the lockdown is over and everyone is driving again, the number of filed claims is on the rise, which means that insurance rates are soon to follow.
