About This Card
The MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard is a rewards card with no annual fee that allows you to collect points with every dollar you spend on eligible purchases.
Once the card has been activated, MBNA cardholders will receive 5,000 bonus points ($25 in cash back value) after making at least $500 or more in eligible purchases within the first 90 days. You’ll get another 5,000 points if you enroll to receive e-statements instead of paper within the first 90 days of opening your account.
For the first 90 days, you’ll earn 4 points for $1 spent on groceries, restaurants, digital media, household utilities and memberships. The earn rate applies up to a maximum spend of $10,000 annually in the applicable category, or when the 90 days are up — whichever comes first.
After that, here’s what the earn rate looks like: 2 points for every $1 spent on groceries, restaurants, digital media, household utilities and memberships, and 1 point for every $1 spent on everything else.
The welcome offer is sure to hook you on the idea of earning points if you’re new to rewards programs.
But there's more — every year, you receive Birthday Bonus Points, equal to 10% of the total number of points earned in the previous 12 months before the month of your birthday, up to a maximum of 10,000 points each year.
Mobile device insurance is also available through your MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard. It covers you for up to $1,000 in coverage for eligible devices in the event of loss, theft, accidental damage, or mechanical breakdown. There's no annual fee for this service.
Be aware, though, of the annual spending cap that applies to purchases in the special categories.
You earn 2 points per dollar on groceries, restaurants, digital media, household utilities and memberships until you hit a maximum annual spend of $10,000 in the applicable category. Then, put your points towards travel or the brand name merchandise available through the MBNA Rewards catalogue.
You also have the option of redeeming them for gift cards from participating retailers. If that isn't appealing, you can ask for cashback. You can even make charitable donations with points — no need to redeem them into cash first.
Conveniently, the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard is accepted at more than one million ATMs worldwide, and offers a lower interest charge of 2.5% on all foreign currency conversions, making it an ideal option for travellers.
As for interest, the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard charges 19.99% APR on purchases, 22.99% APR on balance transfers, and 24.99% APR on cash advances.
